PUBLIC, New York City
I’m no stranger to New York, which I affectionately deemed as Chicago’s northeast cousin. Over the years, I’ve stayed at many hotels including major hotel chains with one primary objective. A hotel less than 5 minutes away from the nearest subway station. Over the years, my palette expanded to more boutique experiences. My last trip to Manhattan was Labor Day in 2018, one year after PUBLIC was established in the Bowery neighborhood. If I knew then what I know now, this hotel would’ve become a prime choice much sooner!
Like most new things, I discovered PUBLIC hotels through social media. The amber-illuminated escalator instantly caught my attention and has been a mainstay for many, especially during major city events such as New York Fashion Week. My initial impression, this hotel delivers earth-tone aesthetics that invoke tranquility and earthy vibrancy reminiscent of a luxury spa & art gallery lovechild.
The self-check-in process is seamless and coupled with a welcoming staff member who provides a brief overview of the check-in process and hotel. As I passed the fresh juice bar and dining lounge area, I was directed to the sleek onyx elevators for a quick trip to the thirteenth floor. I scored a beautiful corner, king bedroom outfitted with the cutest bench, multiple storage spaces, and an incredible view, perfect for a morning latte and journaling. The dwelling has a modern, natural wood aesthetic soothing to an introvert like me. In the daytime, the room feels airy & light, yet the soft, moody lighting in the evening oozes a sultry sex appeal.
The white sheer curtain frames New York, which can make the gloomiest or brightest day picturesque. A special treat for someone like me, the electronic black-out curtains are vampire-approved. On top of the marble side table is a weekly itinerary of events including complimentary fitness classes for hotel guests. If you’re seeking a chill co-working space or resting place pre or post-flight, the 2nd floor is decorated with oversized cream couches, a large wooden table, a pool table for a temporary daytime distraction, and a gorgeous bar.
In the evening, PUBLIC provides entertainment and convenience at your fingertips courtesy of numerous bars, Artspace dance club, and the rooftop. Due to gloomy weather conditions and pending reservations, I didn’t take advantage of Sunset. This rooftop destination for happy hour is an amuse-bouche to a great evening. If you’re dashing to your dinner reservation and rideshare is taking too long, PUBLIC is less than 1-minute walking distance from the 2nd Avenue metro stop on the F line. This location made my frequent trips to Tribeca, Soho, and Wall Street more convenient.
My itinerary for New York was full with more reservations and restaurant reviews than I can count in Manhattan and Brooklyn! As an extremely active traveler, I regret I didn’t slow down enough to fully absorb the moments of solitude, which is perfection for a staycation or weekend getaway.
The seamless blend of trendiness and effortless ease at PUBLIC has left me eager to explore even more on my next visit.
